The following is the joint statement issued by Gorrepati Madhava Rao and G.Mohan, President and General Secretary respectively of HRF, Telangana.
The Human Rights Forum Telangana Stare Committee strongly condemns the Government’s action in revoking the permission given to the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) New Democracy for holding a dharna at Indira Park, Hyderabad on 10 June 2019 without any notice. The Govt earlier permitted the Party to hold dharna. The dharna is organized to demand the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision on the eviction of forest dwellers. The Supre Court in its February 19 order directed all the state governments to evict the unauthorized forest dwellers by July 27 this year. If the order of the Supreme Court is to be implemented about twenty lakh forest dwellers are to be evicted and in Telangana alone, 83,000 Adivasis would become unauthorized residents of forests. Because of Governments’ apathy, the illiterate and ignorant forest dwellers could not file necessary papers for recognizing them as forest dwellers although they have been living in forests for generations.
The proposed dharna was meant for highlighting the plight of the Adivasis. The police arrested many Adivasis who reached Secunderabad railway station in the early hours. Even in many other places intending participants were prevented from going to Hyderabad.
The Government cannot interfere with the democratic rights of the people. The police action is unconstitutional and requires to be condemned and we condemn it.
