HRF Salutes Civil Rights Stalwart Kannabiran

The Human Rights Forum (HRF) deeply mourns the passing away of KG Kannabiran. For over three decades, Kannabiran constantly advocated positive values that were embedded in the Constitution. He reminded the State and its many instruments their Constitutional responsibilities and strove to enforce governmental accountability. He was a builder of the civil liberties movement in the State in the post-emergency period.

Kannabiran consistently opposed violence by the State and emphasised the need to nourish the rule of law and the principles of natural justice. He advocated a political approach to the Naxalite movement in place of the violence suppression that has been the State’s only response to that upsurge.

Kannabiran was a civil rights stalwart who engaged creatively with the law and inspired many towards rights activism. HRF salutes this legend. We have lost a dear friend and inspiration..
