HUMAN RIGHTS FORUM, strongly condemns the undemocratic and arbitrary action of the Telangana Police and the Telangana Government in preventing the meeting of the Revolutionary Writers’ Association (RWA) Virasam, which was scheduled to be held on 05-07-2026, in Sunderayya Viganana Kendram(SVK) in Hyderabad.
Preventing a peaceful democratic gathering reflects an intolerant and repressive attitude that is wholly unacceptable in a constitutional democracy. Such actions violate the democratic spirit of the Constitution and amount to a direct attack on the citizens’ fundamental rights to freedom of expression and association guaranteed under Article-19 of the Indian Constitution.
We wish to remind the Hon’ble Chief Minister that, after assuming office, he had assured the people on the floor of the Assembly that the Congress Government would uphold democratic values and protect civil liberties, including freedom of expression.
A similar incident had occurred in 2004, when the Chikkadpally Police instructed the management of Sunderayya Trust, not to permit a meeting organized by . At that time, our organization had written to the Director General of Police and the Chief Minister seeking intervention. We were later informed that the Chief Minister had advised the police not to resort to such repressive measures. Since then, meetings and democratic gatherings at the venue have continued without obstruction
In this context, the present arbitrary action of the Telangana Police is deeply disturbing and raises serious concerns regarding the shrinking democratic space in the state.
Our Forum, urges the Chief Minister to immediately intervene, review the matter, and direct the State Police not to indulge in arbitrary restrictions and suppression of democratic activities.
