Subject: Demanding Immediate Action to Address the Illegal Demolition of Street Vendor Shops at Vanasthalipuram Vegetable Market.

Sir/Madam,

We are writing to express our deep concern and outrage regarding the recent illegal demolition of Street vendor shops at Vanasthalipuram Rythu Bazar on September 25, 26, 2024. This has affected more than 70 street vendors amounting to lakhs of property loss, including goods to be sold and structure of shops.

Demolition of the shops which provided livelihoods for numerous small-scale vendors, has caused immense hardship and suffering. Action was taken without any prior notice or alternative arrangements, leaving the affected vendors with no means of income and loss of property.

It is important to note that many of these vendors possess valid street vending permits and have been operating in the area for years. The demolition of their shops, which were located in a designated green zone, violates their rights. That particular area is not declared as a Hawker free zone.

Furthermore, the demolition has created significant disruption in the local market, impacting both vendors and consumers. The lack of alternative arrangements has led to inconvenience for the public.

We urge you to take immediate action to address this matter. We request:

  • Investigate the illegal demolition: Conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the demolition and hold those responsible accountable.
  • Respect the rights of street vendors: Ensure that the rights of street vendors are protected and that future actions are in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Revive the Street Vending Committees: Re-establish and empower the Street Vending Committees to ensure that the interests of street vendors are represented and their rights are protected.
  • Provide adequate compensation: Provide adequate compensation to the affected vendors for the loss of their livelihoods and property.
  • Consider alternatives: Alternative areas should be identified for the victims.

We would like to remind you that in 2006, when book stalls on the roads were demolished by the then MCH authorities, to prevent loss of livelihood, alternate locations were provided.

We believe that it is imperative to address this issue promptly and effectively. We hope that you will take the necessary steps to ensure justice for the affected vendors and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this urgent matter.
